We drove to my parents' today and the drive was beautiful thanks to some lovely weather. It wasn't hot and wasn't cold... was more along the lines of just right. Smile.
My mom had some unbelievably good soup simmering with steak, spinach, barley and more hot on the stove. Homemade cornbread circles filled two plates on the counter and cupcake cookies were lined in rows for after lunch.
The children ate boiled eggs and gourmet toasted cheese sandwiches with mounds of melted cheddar in each one.
Papa shared some wonderful and wise thoughts on saving money and being prepared and told us about his first jobs, first vehicles, and changing pay as he moved ahead in life.
The entire visit was such a needed blessing and we stayed for hours.
The twins (Summer & Seth) played and laughed for hours. Seth played games with Braxton ... vehicles on floor road maps, ball, and more. Summer sat at the table to "talk" because that is what she said she wanted to do. Particularly with, Aunt Sandy... me:) It was adorable to watch her come up with conversation topics just to keep the word flow going. She asked about spider webs, spiders, and about the design of my necklace. She asked for pink straws, biscuits, and presented me with a gift of the heart: her clear ring with colored swirls inside see - through plastic. It is still on my pinky and I smile as I remember her saying: "I love you" to me throughout the day.
I left with a book once my grandmother's (at least it is what my mom was told) with pretty pictures and heart stirring words on motherhood. It is titled: Flowers for Mother and is by Leroy Brownlow.
I also have some cherished cookbooks from my mother's collection. Tears stung my eyes on the way home over the giving of these, the way I cherish this beautiful woman and for our shared love of books on food, family and menus.
Braxton and I talked on the way home when I finally gave up relaxing to some music as we drove under the star lit sky. He just had so much to say that I turned off the radio, rolled the windows back up and ... listened.
He came up to me awhile after we arrived home and said:
"Do you know who my best friend is?"
"No. Who?"
"You."
A day more lovely would be hard to land upon...
